Hudson-Athens Lighthouse . Hudson River . New York . Watercolor . 12" x 16"
...the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse sits in the Hudson River between the towns of Hudson, to its east, and Athens on the west, in New York State... marking the approach to the Middle Ground Flats that divide the river further upstream. The light is built of red brick with granite trim, on top of a granite caisson and entered service in 1874. The light was upgraded with a 5th order Fresnel lens in 1926 and automated in 1949. In 1984, a deal was brokered between the New York State's Hudson River Valley Commission and the US Coast Guard to transfer ownership of the light to a non-profit organization. This transfer was completed in 2000, with the title going to the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society. The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse was entered onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
