Rustico Lighthouse . North Rustico Harbour . Prince Edward Island . Canada . Watercolor . 12" x 16"
... the North Rustico Harbour Lighthouse was built in 1876. It is a 35-foot tall, tapered wooden tower with attached keeper's house. In 1884 the structure was moved 500 feet closer to the north entrance of the harbour on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Although in 1895, the foundation was given additional protection with a barricade of reinforced timbers... in 1899, a severe storm knocked the entire building over. It was picked up and moved again... this time a little further away from the shoreline. The light was electrified and automated in 1960. This is the third of the 3 lights I visited on PEI during Hurricane Matthew's storm. This was a crazy nasty day all over the Maritimes.
