Wickford Harbor Lighthouse . Narragansett Bay . Rhode Island . Watercolor . 9" x 12"
... the Wickford Harbor Light sat atop a square, wooden tower with an attached keeper's house... erected over a cylindrical iron & concrete piling at the entrance to Narragansett Bay. It was built in 1882, with a fifth-order Fresnel lens, to augment the 1831 Poplar Point Lighthouse (on shore, in the background), which proved to be located too far away from the deep-water channel, to be of any use for a safe passage into the harbor. The 1882 Wickford Harbor Lighthouse was removed and replaced by an automated, steel skeleton tower light in 1930.
