One Day at the Lansdale Rail Yard . Pennsylvania Northeastern #5342 . New Hope & Ivyland #2198 . CSX #62471 . Watercolor . 14" x 20"

... in 1986, following the breakup of CONRAIL, the railroad's assets were largely distributed between Chessie Seaboard Transportation (CSXT) and Norfolk Southern (NS), which continued shedding numerous smaller and less profitable routes, which were then purchased and/or operated over by startup, shortline railroads. Among their additional route miles, Pennsylvania Northeastern Railroad (PN) founded in 2011 and the East Penn Railroad (ESPN) beginning in 2007, each share half of the former Reading Railroad's (RDG) Bethlehem Branch between Lansdale and Quakertown. The New Hope & Ivyland Railroad (NHRR) had already begun operations in 1966, running on discarded, RDG track between Ivyland and New Hope. Pennsylvania Northeastern interchanges with the New Hope & Ivyland in Warminster and CSX at Lansdale. Pennsylvania Northeastern #5342 is a former Canadian National (CN) EMD SD40-2W of 3,000hp, built in 1980. New Hope & Ivyland #2198, is a former Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) EMD GP-30 of 2,250 hp, built in 1963 and CSX #6247 is a former Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) EMD GP40-2, with 3,000hp, built in 1979. I'm not sure what all the reciprocity is between the PN and the NHRR; I've seen the 5342 in the New Hope yard and the 2198 is often in Lansdale. The Southeast Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) operates a daily schedule of passenger service through Lansdale, connecting Doylestown and Philadelphia. That's a CRYO-TRANS (CRYX) reefer on the far right... the Pennsylvania Northeastern will hand several of these cars over to the East Penn, at their Hatfield interchange, for delivery to the United States Cold Storage facility in Quakertown.
